    Summary

    131I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy effectively localized hyperfunctioning adrenergic tissue in most pheochromocytoma and pheochromoblastoma patients. This imaging method is safe and reliable for detecting adrenal and extra-adrenal tumors.

    Background:

    • Pheochromocytoma and pheochromoblastoma are rare neuroendocrine tumors.
    • Accurate localization of these tumors is crucial for effective treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of 131I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (131I-mIBG) scintigraphy in localizing hyperfunctioning adrenergic tissue in patients with pheochromocytoma and pheochromoblastoma.

    Main Methods:

    • 131I-mIBG scintigraphy was performed on six patients (5 with pheochromocytoma, 1 with pheochromoblastoma).
    • Tumor localization was assessed, and the impact of specific activity and dosage of 131I-mIBG was considered.

    Main Results:

    • Correct tumor localization was achieved in 5 out of 6 patients.
    • One patient with a right adrenal pheochromocytoma showed poor visualization, potentially due to a higher specific activity of 131I-mIBG used.
    • The study identified various tumor locations, including intra-adrenal, retroperitoneal, renal hili, supraclavicular region, and bones.

    Conclusions:

    • 131I-mIBG scintigraphy is a safe and reliable method for detecting both benign and malignant adrenal and extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas.
    • Computed tomography (CT) may be necessary for better differentiation of pheochromocytoma from adjacent tissues.
