    Summary

    Adjustable absorbable sutures for strabismus surgery showed stable eye alignment in most patients, particularly those with good binocular vision. Some patients with poor vision experienced alignment changes post-surgery.

    Background:

    • Strabismus surgery often involves adjustable sutures to fine-tune ocular alignment.
    • Absorbable suture materials offer potential benefits in reducing the need for secondary interventions.

    Observation:

    • This study evaluated strabismus surgery using adjustable sutures made of absorbable material in 19 patients (aged 8-69 years) with paralytic strabismus or who were re-operated.
    • Ocular alignment was assessed at 1 week and 3-12 months post-operatively.

    Findings:

    • Eye position remained stable post-operatively in 12 patients, 11 of whom achieved good or moderate binocular vision.
    • Approximately half of the patients with initially poor binocular vision experienced changes in eye position during follow-up.
    • No evidence of mechanical stress-induced muscle repositioning during suture absorption was observed.

    Implications:

    • Adjustable absorbable sutures can achieve stable ocular alignment and good binocular vision in a majority of strabismus patients.
    • Further investigation may be warranted for patients with pre-existing poor binocular vision to optimize surgical outcomes.
    • The use of absorbable materials appears safe and effective in this surgical context, without adverse mechanical effects on eye muscles.
