    Summary

This study reports on six patients with post-infantile giant cell hepatitis (PIGCH), a rare liver condition. Most cases showed progression to cirrhosis, with negative Hepatitis B markers suggesting a distinct etiology.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Virology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Post-infantile giant cell hepatitis (PIGCH) is a rare liver disease.
    • Giant cell formation in hepatitis can indicate various underlying causes.
    • Understanding PIGCH is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.

    Observation:

    • Six patients diagnosed with PIGCH were analyzed, aged 12-74 years.
    • One patient experienced acute giant cell hepatitis with full recovery.
    • Five patients presented with chronic aggressive hepatitis and cirrhosis, characterized by giant cell formation.

    Findings:

    • Cirrhosis developed within 5-11 months of hepatitis onset in five patients.
    • While most cases became inactive, only one showed biopsy-confirmed inactivity.
    • PIGCH represented 0.25% of post-infantile hepatitis cases, with a peak incidence between 1972-1974.
    • Hepatitis B markers were negative in all tested PIGCH cases.

    Implications:

    • The negative Hepatitis B markers in PIGCH cases suggest a non-HBV etiology.
    • A specific infectious agent may be responsible for this distinct form of hepatitis.
    • Further research is needed to identify the causative agent and understand PIGCH pathogenesis.
