[The transmission of the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus (HBsAg) through placenta]

The study of the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus had been performed on 220 mother-infant pairs using passive haemagglutination test. As a result of this study, HBsAg had been found in serum from nine mothers and in cord serum from one infant. Two months after delivery, HBsAg were demonstrated in the circulatory blood of these nine mothers who were HBsAg positive, and HBsAg were found in the circulatory blood of three infants of these nine mothers, too. The incidence of HBsAg in pregnant women was 4.09%, in contrast, in the blood of umbilical cord was 0.45%. In our study, the rate of transmission of the HBsAg through placenta from pregnant women who carry the antigen to their children had been found 11.11 percent.
