Sleep pattern variations as a function of age in affective disorders

J M Taub

    The International Journal of Neuroscience
    |December 1, 1982

    Summary

Young adults with depression exhibit significant sleep disturbances, including more stage 1 sleep and frequent awakenings. These sleep anomalies are highly variable, indicating an disrupted sleep-activity cycle.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Psychiatry
    • Sleep Medicine

    Background:

    • Nocturnal sleep polygraphic features in young adults with unipolar depression are not well-characterized.
    • Understanding sleep disturbances in depression is crucial for identifying physiological dysregulation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate polygraphic sleep features in young adult psychiatric patients experiencing acute unipolar depressive episodes.
    • To compare sleep patterns between depressed young adults and age-matched healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Polygraphic sleep recordings were conducted over three consecutive nights for 12 depressed patients (under 26) and matched controls.
    • Averaged values and variability of polygraphic indexes were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Depressed patients showed less stage 4 sleep, more stage 1 sleep, increased stage transitions, and intermittent wakefulness compared to controls.
    • Sleep perturbations were highly variable across nights and individuals in the depressed group.
    • These anomalies resemble those seen in other pathological states with physiological disregulation.

    Conclusions:

    • Young adult depression is associated with sleep-polygraphic anomalies, suggesting an imbalance in the 24-hour sleep-activity cycle.
    • These sleep aberrations are an attenuated form of those observed in older adults with affective disorders.
    • Sleep disturbances in depression may reflect an underlying physiological dysregulation.
