Secondary syphilitic hepatitis is a rare condition in homosexual men. Early diagnosis and penicillin treatment lead to good patient outcomes, especially with rising syphilis rates.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Syphilology

    Background:

    • Secondary syphilitic hepatitis is an uncommon manifestation of syphilis.
    • Increasing syphilis prevalence necessitates awareness of its diverse presentations.

    Observation:

    • Two homosexual men presented with clinical and biological signs consistent with secondary syphilitic hepatitis.
    • Positive syphilitic serological tests were noted in both cases.
    • Treponema pallidum was identified via electron microscopy in a liver biopsy from one patient.

    Findings:

    • Both patients showed clinical improvement following anti-syphilitic penicillin therapy.
    • The diagnosis was confirmed by serological tests and, in one case, by direct visualization of the pathogen.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • Secondary syphilitic hepatitis is an important diagnosis not to miss due to its treatability.
    • Increased awareness is crucial given the rising incidence of syphilis.
