Hearing-aid use and available aid ranges

L J Upfold, D A Wilson

    British Journal of Audiology

    Summary

A wide selection of hearing aids is not essential for successful auditory rehabilitation. Fitting methods and procedures are more critical than the range of hearing aids available for consistent hearing aid use.

    Area of Science:

    • Audiology
    • Hearing Rehabilitation
    • Medical Devices

    Background:

    • The necessity of a broad range of hearing aids in auditory rehabilitation is often asserted without substantial supporting evidence.
    • There is a lack of clarity regarding the composition of an adequate hearing aid range and the criteria for its adequacy.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between the available range of hearing aids and the outcomes of hearing aid fitting.
    • To determine the significance of fitting methods versus the range of hearing aids in ensuring consistent usage.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparative analysis of hearing aid usage rates between two large populations.
    • One population was fitted using a wide range of hearing aids, while the other used a narrow range.

    Main Results:

    • Hearing aid fitting methods and procedures were found to be more influential than the range of available hearing aids.
    • Consistent hearing aid use is more dependent on the fitting process than the breadth of the aid selection.

    Conclusions:

    • The extent of the hearing aid range is less critical than the quality of fitting methods and procedures for successful auditory rehabilitation.
    • Effective fitting strategies are paramount for ensuring patients consistently use their hearing aids, regardless of the available selection.
