Copper loss from the copper T model TCu22OC

    Summary

Mineral deposits on Copper T intrauterine devices (IUDs) slow copper release. This study found that increased mineral buildup on IUDs correlates with a reduced copper dissolution rate, impacting device longevity and copper loss.

    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive Health
    • Biomaterials Science
    • Medical Device Analysis

    Background:

    • Copper T intrauterine devices (IUDs) are widely used for long-term contraception.
    • The presence of mineral deposits on IUDs is a known phenomenon, but its effect on copper release is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of mineral deposits on the copper dissolution rate of the Copper T Model TCu22OC.
    • To correlate mineral deposit characteristics with copper loss over time.

    Main Methods:

    • Examination of 118 explanted Copper T22OC IUDs (12-72 months in utero).
    • Grading of mineral deposit coverage on the copper surface.
    • Copper analysis of 30 devices to determine daily copper loss.

    Main Results:

    • Mineral deposits increased in size during the first three years of IUD use.
    • A mean daily copper loss of 29.4 micrograms was observed (range: 7.3-62.1 micrograms).
    • An inverse correlation was found between mineral deposit amount and copper loss rate.

    Conclusions:

    • Mineral deposits significantly influence the copper dissolution rate of Copper T IUDs.
    • Increased mineral deposition on the copper surface reduces the rate of copper loss.
    • This finding has implications for understanding IUD longevity and efficacy.
