    Summary

    Long-term levamisole therapy showed promise for children with chronic hepatitis B. Most patients experienced normalized liver enzymes and improved liver histology after treatment for hepatitis B e antigen-positive chronic hepatitis.

    Background:

    • Chronic hepatitis B infection affects numerous children worldwide.
    • Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) positivity indicates active viral replication and infectivity.
    • Chronic active hepatitis requires effective therapeutic interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of levamisole in treating HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B in children.
    • To assess the impact of levamisole on viral markers and liver histology.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight children with HBeAg-positive chronic active hepatitis B received levamisole (2.5 mg/kg/day, twice weekly for 6-18 months).
    • Treatment outcomes were monitored through liver enzyme levels, serological markers (HBeAg, anti-HBe), HBV-DNA polymerase, and liver biopsy.

  • Response patterns were analyzed based on pretreatment transaminase levels and liver hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) expression.

    • Six of eight children achieved normalized transaminases within 4-18 months.
