    Background:

    • Kala-azar, also known as visceral leishmaniasis, is a severe parasitic disease caused by Leishmania species.
    • It is endemic in several parts of the world, but its presence in Afghanistan was previously undocumented.

    • Three pediatric cases presenting with classical symptoms of visceral leishmaniasis were identified.
    • The cases originated from Kabul and Badghis Province, indicating a potential new endemic area.
    • Patients included two girls aged 4 and 5 years, and a 5-year-old boy.

    • Diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of amastigotes, the diagnostic stage of the parasite, in bone marrow aspirates.
