    Summary

    Acute retinal necrosis (ARN) is a severe eye condition causing rapid vision loss due to retinal vessel occlusion. This study found chronic inflammation in affected eyes, but the cause remains unknown and unresponsive to treatment.

    Background:

    • Acute retinal necrosis (ARN) syndrome is a severe intraocular inflammatory condition.
    • ARN can lead to significant and rapid vision loss.

    Observation:

    • Six patients with ARN presented with peripheral retinal vessel occlusion.
    • Rapidly progressing peripheral retinal whitening was observed, leading to decreased vision.
    • Four patients exhibited bilateral ARN, indicating a systemic component or predisposition.

    Findings:

    • Histologic examination revealed chronic granulomatous inflammation in affected ocular tissues.
    • Extensive medical workups did not identify any immune system compromise in the patients.
