Insights
Mortality from digestive atresia is higher with multiple atresia and significantly increases when trisomy is present. Birth weight and malformations also impact survival rates in these infants.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Neonatal Medicine
- Medical Genetics
Context:
- Digestive atresia presents a significant challenge in neonatal care.
- Understanding mortality factors is crucial for improving outcomes.
Purpose:
- To investigate the relationship between digestive atresia mortality and key clinical parameters.
- To identify specific factors associated with increased mortality risk.
Summary:
- Mortality rates in digestive atresia correlate with atresia type (single vs. multiple).
- The presence of trisomy, particularly with multiple atresia, dramatically elevates mortality.
- Birth weight and co-occurring malformations are also significant determinants of survival.
Impact:
- Provides critical data for risk stratification in neonates with digestive atresia.
- Informs clinical management strategies and prognostic assessments.
- Highlights the importance of genetic screening in cases of digestive atresia and malformations.
Abstract:
Authors study digestive atresia mortality in relation to different parameters such as type of atresia, weight at birth and associated malformations. Mortality increases depending on whether the atresia be single or multiple, this increase being quite obvious when single or multiple atresia is associated with trisomy.
