    Background:

    • Replication of Chaney et al. (1978) behavioral skill training for alcoholism.
    • Extension to a higher socio-economic status population.
    • Standard inpatient treatment as a baseline.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of behavioral skill training (BST) in a higher socio-economic status alcoholic population.
    • To compare BST against a discussion-only control and a no-treatment control.
    • To determine if BST is superior to discussion of relapse-precipitating events.

    Main Methods:

    • Subjects received BST (behavioral rehearsal of coping responses) or participated in a discussion group, or received no additional treatment.
    • All interventions were adjuncts to standard inpatient alcoholism treatment.
    • Relapse-precipitating events were identified and addressed in training/discussion.

    Main Results:

    • Both the skill training group and the discussion group showed significant improvement compared to the no-treatment control group.
    • There was no statistically significant difference in outcomes between the skill training group and the discussion group.
    • Findings contrasted with Chaney et al. (1978), which indicated skill training superiority.

    Conclusions:

    • Behavioral skill training and discussion of coping strategies are both effective adjuncts to inpatient alcoholism treatment for this population.
    • The specific behavioral rehearsal component may not be essential for efficacy when compared to guided discussion.
    • Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms of change and optimal treatment components.
