R McGuinness, K D Frumar

    Australian Journal of Ophthalmology
    |August 1, 1982
    PubMed
    Summary

Combination therapy using timolol and dipivalyl epinephrine eye drops effectively manages chronic simple glaucoma and ocular hypertension. This two-year study confirmed additive intraocular pressure reduction with good patient acceptance and compliance.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Chronic simple glaucoma and ocular hypertension require effective long-term management.
    • Combination therapy is explored to enhance intraocular pressure (IOP) control.

    Observation:

    • Eighteen patients received a two-year treatment regimen of timolol 0.25% and dipivalyl epinephrine (DPE) 0.1% eye drops twice daily.
    • Patient acceptance and compliance with the twice-daily dosing were excellent.

    Findings:

    • The combination therapy demonstrated satisfactory IOP control in the majority of patients.
    • An additive effect of timolol and DPE in lowering IOP was confirmed.
    • Two patients experienced sensitivity to DPE but tolerated timolol monotherapy.

    Implications:

    • Timolol and DPE combination therapy is an acceptable and effective treatment for glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
    • The regimen shows sustained IOP stability after an initial period.
    • Further research may explore long-term efficacy and safety profiles.
