    Summary

Female appendectomy (appendix removal) can increase the risk of infertility. Women operated on after adolescence face a higher risk of developing mechanical sterility due to pelvic adhesions.

    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive Medicine
    • Surgical Outcomes

    Background:

    • Pelvic adhesions are a known complication of abdominal surgery.
    • Appendectomy is a common surgical procedure in women.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the incidence of female sterility following appendectomy.
    • To determine if the timing of appendectomy influences the risk of infertility.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparative study of two groups of women.
    • Group 1: Underwent appendectomy before age ten.
    • Group 2: Women with confirmed mechanical sterility, assessed for prior appendectomy history.

    Main Results:

    • Appendectomy patients showed a higher rate of mechanical sterility.
    • 71% of women who developed sterility were operated on after age 17.
    • Appendectomy rate in infertile women was 29% vs. 7-10% in the general population.

    Conclusions:

    • Appendectomy, especially post-adolescence, increases the risk of female mechanical sterility.
    • Pelvic adhesions are a likely cause of post-appendectomy infertility.
    • Surgical timing is a critical factor in appendectomy-related sterility risk.
