    Summary

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) offers a symptom-free life for end-stage renal failure (ESRF) patients, improving blood pressure and hemoglobin. However, complications like peritonitis and protein loss require careful management.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Internal Medicine
    • Renal Replacement Therapy

    Background:

    • End-stage renal failure (ESRF) presents significant management challenges.
    • Dialysis remains a critical intervention for ESRF patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and complications of Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) in ESRF patients.
    • To assess the impact of CAPD on clinical parameters and patient quality of life.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of seven ESRF patients were treated with CAPD.
    • Clinical parameters including blood pressure, hemoglobin, blood urea, serum creatinine, and acid-base balance were monitored.
    • Complications such as peritonitis, protein loss, and catheter issues were recorded.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • All patients experienced a symptom-free ambulant life during CAPD.
    • Significant improvements were observed in blood pressure control and hemoglobin levels.
    • Metabolic acidosis was corrected, and blood urea/serum creatinine levels were near normal.
    • Recurrent peritonitis, significant protein loss, and catheter failure were identified as major complications.

    Conclusions:

    • CAPD can provide a symptom-free ambulant lifestyle for ESRF patients.
    • While effective in managing key clinical parameters, CAPD is associated with notable complications.
    • CAPD may be a viable treatment option for select ESRF patients, warranting careful consideration of risks and benefits.
