Direction-specific tilt illusion: with and without gaze fixation

    Summary

Visual perception of grating orientation is distorted by surrounding gratings. This tilt illusion is stronger when gratings move in the same direction, suggesting direction-specific neural processing.

    Area of Science:

    • Visual perception
    • Neuroscience
    • Computational vision

    Background:

    • The tilt illusion describes a misperception of a test grating's orientation when influenced by a surrounding annulus grating.
    • Previous research has shown a direction-specific tilt aftereffect, implying direction-tuned neural mechanisms.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the direction-specificity of the tilt illusion.
    • To determine if the mechanisms underlying the tilt illusion and tilt aftereffect are similar.
    • To infer properties of neural processing based on the tilt illusion.

    Main Methods:

    • Participants viewed a test grating surrounded by an annulus grating.
    • The orientation of the test grating was perceived to shift.
    • The magnitude of this orientation misperception was measured under conditions of same-direction and opposite-direction motion between the gratings.

    Main Results:

    • The magnitude of the tilt illusion was significantly greater when the test and annulus gratings moved in the same direction compared to opposite directions.
    • This finding demonstrates a direction-specific tilt illusion.

    Conclusions:

    • The results support the hypothesis that similar neural mechanisms underlie both the tilt illusion and the tilt aftereffect.
    • Findings suggest that lateral inhibition in orientation-selective neurons primarily occurs between units with similar orientation and motion direction selectivities.
