    Summary

    Fever chills can occur centrally without skin cooling. Exogenous pyrogen injections in men showed that shivering, not skin temperature reduction, triggers the sensation of chill during fever.

    Background:

    • Fever is a common physiological response to infection or inflammation.
    • The sensation of chill during fever is often associated with shivering and perceived coldness.
    • The exact mechanisms triggering the sensation of chill during fever remain incompletely understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between skin temperature, shivering, and the sensation of chill during induced fever.
    • To determine if peripheral skin temperature reduction is a prerequisite for experiencing chills.

    Main Methods:

    • Seven healthy adult males were immersed in neutral temperature water (34.5°C).
    • Intravenous injection of exogenous pyrogen was administered to induce fever.
    • Subjects reported sensations of chill and shivering was monitored.

    Main Results:

    • Five subjects developed fever and exhibited shivering, reporting sensations of chill concurrently.
    • Two subjects did not shiver and reported no sensation of chill.
    • Fever and chill sensation occurred in the absence of significant skin temperature reduction.

    Conclusions:

    • The sensation of chill during fever is not dependent on a reduction in skin temperature.
    • Central mechanisms, likely triggered by pyrogen action, are responsible for the generation of chill sensations.
    • Shivering appears to be a key correlate of the chill sensation during fever.
