Secretory otitis media--a retrospective general practice survey

P K Schutte, D L Beales, R Dalton

The Journal of Laryngology and Otology
    |January 1, 1981
    PubMed
    Summary

Children with secretory otitis media (SOM) showed higher rates of atopy and previous infections. Antihistamines and decongestants may help prevent SOM development in children with recurrent upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and acute otitis media (AOM).

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatrics
    • Otolaryngology
    • General Practice

    Background:

    • Secretory otitis media (SOM) is a common condition in children.
    • Factors contributing to SOM development require further investigation.
    • Previous upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and acute otitis media (AOM) are common in children.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between atopy, URTI, AOM, and the incidence of SOM in children.
    • To evaluate the current treatment practices for URTI and AOM in children with and without SOM.
    • To explore the potential role of antihistamines and decongestants in preventing SOM.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of general practice records of 68 children diagnosed with SOM.
    • Matched control group based on sex, year of birth, and general practice list.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of recorded incidence of atopy, URTI, and AOM, and their treatments.
  • Main Results:

    • Children with SOM had twice the incidence of recorded atopy and previous URTI compared to controls.
    • The SOM group exhibited three times the incidence of recorded AOM attacks.
    • Antibiotic treatment for URTI and AOM was similar; antihistamines and decongestants were rarely recorded for AOM.

    Conclusions:

    • A higher incidence of atopy in children with SOM suggests a potential link.
    • The findings suggest that routine use of antihistamines and decongestants in treating URTI and AOM might help prevent SOM.
    • A prospective, double-blind trial is recommended to confirm the preventive role of these medications.
