Endophthalmitis after cataract extraction: a retrospective case study

    Summary

    A patient developed severe eye inflammation after cataract surgery. Early diagnosis and treatment of postoperative endophthalmitis, including vitreous aspiration and intraocular antibiotics, could have potentially saved the eye.

    Background:

    • A 43-year-old male patient presented with senile cataract, glaucoma, and pterygium.
    • Combined pterygium shaving and extracapsular cataract extraction were performed.

    Observation:

    • Postoperatively, the patient developed thick aftercataract and iridocyclitis.
    • Initial treatment with atropine and steroids was ineffective.
    • A subsequent curette evacuation for presumed lens-induced uveitis led to further deterioration.

    Findings:

    • The patient's condition worsened, necessitating eye evacuation within four days.
    • Culture of the material revealed Staphylococcus epidermidis (albus) growth.
    • This indicated a likely case of postoperative endophthalmitis.
