    Summary

Transient global amnesia (TGA) may be linked to migraines. Many TGA patients experienced migraines, and some had migrainous symptoms or severe headaches during their TGA episodes.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Vascular Neurology

    Background:

    • Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a distinct neurological condition characterized by sudden, temporary memory loss.
    • The underlying pathophysiology of TGA is not fully understood, but posterior circulation vascular events are often implicated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential association between migraine and transient global amnesia (TGA).
    • To explore if migraine-related vascular dysfunction could contribute to the occurrence of TGA.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of twelve patients diagnosed with transient global amnesia (TGA).
    • Detailed review of patient histories, focusing on prior migraine diagnoses (classical and common) and accompanying symptoms during TGA episodes.

    Main Results:

    • All twelve TGA patients had a history of migraines.
    • Three patients experienced classic migrainous phenomena concurrent with TGA.
    • Nine patients reported severe headache during their amnestic attack.

    Conclusions:

    • Migrainous vascular dysfunction, particularly in the posterior cerebral artery territory, is a plausible explanation for TGA.
    • Shared precipitants and the generally benign nature of both conditions suggest a link.
    • Distinguishing TGA from arteriosclerotic ischemia is supported by the absence of repetitive queries in TGA, unlike in amnestic stroke.
