    This study re-examines anorexia nervosa (AN) in twins, finding limited evidence for genetic factors determining AN etiology. The review suggests genetics may not be a primary cause of this eating disorder.

    Background:

    • Previous research, including a 1979 review by Askevold and Heiberg, explored twin studies to assess AN heritability.

    • Three additional case studies from the authors' practice were incorporated into the analysis.

    Findings:

    • A comprehensive review of available twin data does not substantially support a determining role for genetic factors in anorexia nervosa.
    • The evidence does not strongly indicate that genetic predisposition is the primary driver of anorexia nervosa.

    Implications:

    • Further research is needed to understand the complex etiology of anorexia nervosa.
    • Environmental and psychological factors may play a more significant role than previously assumed in AN development.
