    Background:

    • Secretory otitis media (SOM) is a common middle ear condition.
    • The cellular mechanisms underlying SOM pathogenesis are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and type of proliferating cells in middle ear effusions and blood of patients with SOM.
    • To explore the role of immune cells in the development of SOM.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized the [3H]thymidine autoradiography technique.
    • Analyzed 148 mucoid middle ear effusions and corresponding blood samples from SOM patients.
    • Compared findings with control subjects.

    Main Results:

    • Increased proportion of proliferating lymphocytes observed in SOM patients' blood compared to controls.
    • Proliferating cells found in 60.1% of middle ear effusions, dependent on cell viability.
    • Effusions contained proliferating lymphocytes and macrophages, while blood samples only had lymphocytes.

    • SOM is characterized by an inflammatory immune response.
