    Anesthesiology abstracts from the International Anesthesia Research Society (I.A.R.S.) and American Society of Anesthesiologists (A.S.A.) meetings show varying publication rates and citation impact. I.A.R.S. abstracts were published more frequently and cited sooner than A.S.A. abstracts.

    • Understanding the publication trajectory and impact of meeting abstracts is crucial for assessing research dissemination.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the publication rates, journal distribution, and citation impact of abstracts presented at the International Anesthesia Research Society (I.A.R.S.) and American Society of Anesthesiologists (A.S.A.) annual meetings.
    • To analyze the lag time between abstract presentation and full-text publication.

    • Retrospective analysis of abstracts presented at the 1979 and 1980 I.A.R.S. meetings and the 1978 A.S.A. meeting.

    • By July 1, 1981, four 1979 I.A.R.S. abstracts were cited in SCI, compared to fifty-six 1979 A.S.A. abstracts by January 1, 1981.

    Conclusions:

    • Abstracts from the I.A.R.S. meetings demonstrated a higher propensity for timely publication in specialized anesthesia journals and earlier citation impact compared to A.S.A. meeting abstracts.
    • The findings suggest differences in the publication pathways and dissemination speed of anesthesiology research presented at major society meetings.
