    Summary

    Sleep deprivation does not change the actual physical work required for a "very hard" exercise intensity. Perceived exertion may be overestimated after sleep loss, suggesting previous findings might be spurious.

    Background:

    • Sleep loss is known to alter the perceptual response to exercise, with subjects reporting increased difficulty.
    • It remains unclear if this perceived increase is a true physiological change or a psychological expectation due to sleep deprivation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether sleep loss genuinely increases the physiological strain of exercise at a self-selected "very hard" intensity.
    • To determine if perceived exertion ratings are reliable indicators of exercise intensity after sleep deprivation.

    Main Methods:

    • 24 subjects completed a treadmill exercise test at a self-selected "very hard" intensity after normal sleep and after 30 hours of sleep deprivation.
    • Subjects adjusted treadmill grade to maintain a constant perceived exertion, unaware of the actual grade.
    • Physiological measures including ventilation, oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide production, and heart rate were recorded.

    Main Results:

    • Subjects selected nearly identical absolute work loads (treadmill grade) for the same perceived exertion under both sleep conditions.
    • Ventilation, oxygen uptake, and carbon dioxide production were not significantly different between conditions.
    • Heart rate was significantly lower during exercise after sleep deprivation compared to after normal sleep.

    Conclusions:

    • The increased perceived exertion reported after sleep loss may not reflect a true increase in physiological strain.
    • The findings suggest that previously observed increases in perceived exertion during constant-load exercise after sleep loss might be spurious, potentially influenced by psychological factors.
