Polydactyly--bifid thumb

The case of a five year old girl with a bifid thumb is presented. The radial thumb showed opposition function at the metacarpal but the phalanges were crooked and stiff. The ulnar thumb could flex and extend actively. The treatment consisted of amputation of the crooked phalanges of the radial thumb and transfer of the ulnar thumb on its neurovascular bundles to the first ray to provide extension, flexion and opposition. The final functional result is nearly normal.
