Silastic radial head prostheses after fracture show limited success. Routine use is not recommended due to high failure rates, especially in complex elbow fractures.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic surgery
    • Biomaterials science

    Background:

    • Radial head fractures are common injuries.
    • Silastic prostheses have been used for radial head reconstruction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term outcomes of Silastic radial head prostheses.
    • To determine the indications and efficacy of these implants in fracture management.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 17 patients with Silastic radial head prostheses.
    • Average follow-up of 6.7 years.
    • Analysis of implant survival and functional outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • Nine patients had associated elbow dislocations or Monteggia fractures.
    • Six implants placed during fracture treatment showed initial success, but 3 had radiographic failure.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Five failures occurred in the remaining 11 patients, with 4 requiring prosthesis removal.
  • Conclusions:

    • The use of Silastic radial head prostheses after fracture has very limited indications.
    • Routine implantation is not supported by current evidence due to high failure rates.
