    Summary

    Computed tomography (CT) scans showing brain atrophy in elderly individuals are not reliable indicators of dementia. Ventricular enlargement, however, showed a correlation with dementia severity in this study.

    Background:

    • Age-related changes in the brain are common in elderly populations.
    • Distinguishing between normal aging and dementia is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the correlation between computed tomography (CT) findings and the degree of dementia in elderly patients.
    • To determine if cortical atrophy or ventricular enlargement on CT scans are indicative of senile dementia.

    Main Methods:

    • A correlational study was conducted involving 59 elderly patients.
    • CT scan findings (cortical atrophy, ventricular size) were compared with the assessed degree of dementia.

    Main Results:

    • Cortical atrophy was found to be related to age, but not statistically correlated with dementia.
    • Ventricular enlargement was related to age and also statistically correlated with dementia.
    • No significant relationship was observed between cortical atrophy and ventricular size.

    • Ventricular enlargement may serve as a potential imaging biomarker associated with dementia in older adults.
