    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Psychotherapy Research

    Background:

    • Short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STAPP) is a therapeutic approach.
    • Evaluating psychotherapy outcomes presents inherent complexities.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the selection criteria and technique of STAPP.
    • To present preliminary findings from an ongoing outcome study of STAPP.

    Main Methods:

    • 22 patients received STAPP.
    • 8 control patients underwent a waiting period before treatment.
    • Outcome was assessed by two independent evaluators.

    Main Results:

    • 14 of 22 STAPP patients were rated as 'recovered'.
    • 4 STAPP patients were rated as 'much better'.
    • Control patients showed minimal improvement during the waiting period, with significant improvement after subsequent STAPP treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • Preliminary findings suggest STAPP is an effective treatment.
    • Further research is needed to fully understand STAPP's efficacy and complexities in evaluation.
