    Summary

    Mitotic activity in parathyroid disease, including parathyroid adenoma and hyperplasia, was examined. Findings indicate that mitotic activity alone is an unreliable predictor of aggressive potential in these conditions.

    Background:

    • Parathyroid adenoma and hyperplasia are common conditions affecting the parathyroid glands.
    • Assessing the potential for aggressive disease in parathyroid conditions is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the reliability of mitotic activity as an indicator of aggressive potential in parathyroid adenoma and hyperplasia.
    • To correlate mitotic counts with clinical outcomes in patients with parathyroid disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Histopathological examination of tissue sections from 17 cases of parathyroid adenoma and 10 cases of parathyroid hyperplasia.
    • Identification and quantification of mitotic figures within the examined tissue samples.
    • Clinical follow-up of all patients to assess for recurrent or aggressive disease.

    Main Results:

    • Mitotic figures were identified in 12 of 17 parathyroid adenoma cases and 8 of 10 parathyroid hyperplasia cases.
    • Despite the presence of numerous mitoses in four patients, no evidence of recurrent or aggressive disease was observed during clinical follow-up.
    • Mitotic activity varied among cases without a clear correlation to clinical aggressiveness.

    Conclusions:

    • Mitotic activity in parathyroid tissue is a common finding in both adenoma and hyperplasia.
    • Mitotic activity alone should not be considered a definitive indicator of aggressive potential or prognosis in parathyroid disease.
    • Further investigation into reliable biomarkers for predicting parathyroid disease behavior is warranted.
