    Summary

Commercial weight reduction programs show high dropout rates, with 70% of women leaving within 12 weeks. These high attrition rates question the overall effectiveness of such obesity management strategies.

    Area of Science:

    • Obesity Management
    • Behavioral Science

    Background:

    • Nonprofessional self-helping groups increasingly dominate obesity management.
    • Limited independent data exists on the efficacy of these commercial weight reduction programs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the attrition rates and implied effectiveness of a commercial weight reduction program.

    Main Methods:

    • A study involving 108 women in a commercial weight reduction program.
    • Tracking member dropout rates over a 12-week period.

    Main Results:

    • Very high attrition rates were observed: 50% dropped out within six weeks and 70% within 12 weeks.
    • Similar high attrition rates were reported in five other international programs.

    Conclusions:

    • High attrition significantly diminishes the effectiveness of commercial weight reduction programs.
    • Caution is advised when interpreting weight loss data from participants who remain in these programs.
