Summary

Post-coital intrauterine contraceptive device insertion in 191 women showed normal expulsion and medical removal rates. However, higher non-medical removal rates and a low failure rate suggest potential for emergency contraception.

Background:

Post-coital contraception is crucial for preventing unintended pregnancies.
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are effective long-acting reversible contraceptives.
The use of IUDs for emergency contraception requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of post-coital insertion of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs).
To assess expulsion, removal, and pregnancy rates in women using IUDs for emergency contraception.

Main Methods:

A retrospective study of 191 patients undergoing post-coital IUD insertion.
Utilized standard Gravigard [Copper 7] devices for the majority of patients.
Monitored expulsion, medical, and non-medical removal rates, as well as pregnancy outcomes.

Main Results:

Normal expulsion and medical removal rates were observed.
Higher than expected non-medical removal rates were noted.
A low pregnancy rate of 0.6% was reported, with one case of device failure.

Conclusions:

Post-coital IUD insertion is a viable option for emergency contraception with a low failure rate.
While generally safe, higher non-medical removal rates warrant attention.
Further research is needed to optimize IUD use for emergency contraception.
