    Summary

    This study investigated if slow information processing causes memory loss in organic amnesia. Results indicate that cognitive slowness is not the primary cause of amnesia, even in alcoholic patients.

    • A group of alcoholic amnesics and matched normal controls participated.
    • Subjects performed word identification and category membership tasks with varying complexity (single vs. dual targets).
    • Reaction times were measured to assess processing speed differences.

    • Alcoholic amnesics exhibited slightly slower reaction times than controls, but this difference was not statistically significant.
