Recurrent post-partum gastroenteritis with eosinophilia

R Lang, I Jutrin, M Ravid

    Hepato-Gastroenterology
    |April 1, 1981

    Summary

A woman experienced two episodes of acute gastroenteritis with high eosinophil counts, each linked to childbirth. This case suggests a milder form of eosinophilic gastroenteritis, even without typical diagnostic criteria.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is a rare disorder characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms and eosinophilic infiltration of the gut wall.
    • Diagnosis typically requires eosinophilic infiltration of the gastric mucosa, a criterion not met in this case.

    Observation:

    • A young woman presented with two distinct episodes of acute, self-limited gastroenteritis over eight years.
    • Both episodes were associated with or possibly triggered by normal childbirth.
    • The patient exhibited marked eosinophilia during these episodes.

    Findings:

    • Despite a normal gastric mucosal biopsy, the clinical presentation suggests a possible milder variant of eosinophilic gastroenteritis.
    • The recurrent nature and association with childbirth are notable features.

    Implications:

    • This case expands the spectrum of eosinophilic gastroenteritis, suggesting milder presentations may exist.
    • Further research is needed to understand the potential link between childbirth and gastrointestinal eosinophilic conditions.
