    Summary

    Clostridium difficile was detected in 3% of fecal samples. This suggests C. difficile can be easily isolated and may indicate changes in gut flora, often associated with self-healing gastroenteritis.

    Background:

    • Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a bacterium.
    • Gastroenteritis can be caused by various bacterial pathogens.
    • The role of C. difficile in gastroenteritis requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of C. difficile in fecal samples.
    • To investigate the co-occurrence of C. difficile with other enteric pathogens.
    • To explore the potential role of C. difficile in gastroenteritis.

    Main Methods:

    • Fecal samples (n=2,390) were collected over 43 days.
    • Samples underwent standard cultivation and special selective medium cultivation for C. difficile.
    • Detection of Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, and Yersinia was also performed.
