    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the learning performance of male offspring from parents with schizophrenia, affective psychosis, nonpsychotic disorders, and normal controls.
    • To examine the effects of different reinforcement conditions (neutral, praise, censure) on task performance.
    • To determine if maternal social reinforcement specifically disrupts learning in offspring of parents with certain psychiatric diagnoses.

    Main Methods:

    • Ninety-nine male offspring (ages 7 and 10) from four parental diagnostic groups (schizophrenic, affective psychotic, nonpsychotic patient, normal control) participated.
    • Participants performed a nonsense syllable discrimination task under neutral feedback, maternal praise, and maternal censure conditions.
    • Parental diagnoses were established using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III) criteria.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences in errors were observed across groups under the neutral feedback condition.
    • Offspring of schizophrenic and nonpsychotic patients made significantly more errors during praise and censure conditions compared to offspring of affective psychotics and normal controls.
    • Maternal social reinforcement (praise or censure), or even the mother's voice alone, disrupted learning efficiency in children of schizophrenic and nonpsychotic parents.

    Conclusions:

    • Maternal social reinforcement has a detrimental effect on the learning efficiency of male offspring from families with schizophrenia and nonpsychotic parental disorders.
    • The chronicity and comprehensibility of parental disturbances may explain the observed differences in children's learning performance.
    • These findings highlight the complex interplay between parental psychopathology, parent-child interaction, and cognitive development in at-risk children.
