    Summary

    Postoperative cranial computed tomography (CT) scans can show contrast enhancement mimicking an abscess. This enhancement is linked to neovascularity at the surgical site, not infection, and can be differentiated from abscess by the absence of surrounding edema.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the underlying cause of contrast enhancement observed at surgical margins in postoperative cranial CT scans.
    • To differentiate this enhancement from infectious processes like brain abscesses using a canine experimental model.

    Main Methods:

    • Sequential CT scanning with and without contrast enhancement was performed on canine brains after partial hemisphere resection.
    • CT findings were systematically correlated with subsequent histological examination of the surgical site.

    Main Results:

    • Contrast enhancement at the surgical margin was found to be temporally and spatially related to postsurgical neovascularity.
