Plasma catecholamines during exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in bronchial asthma

    Summary

    Patients with exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) show elevated adrenaline and noradrenaline levels during and after exercise. These catecholamine changes were significantly different compared to asthmatics without EIB and healthy controls.

    Background:

    • Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness.
    • Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is a common symptom in asthma patients.
    • Catecholamines, such as adrenaline and noradrenaline, play a role in the body's response to stress and exercise.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate plasma catecholamine levels during and after submaximal exercise in patients with bronchial asthma.
    • To compare catecholamine responses in asthmatic patients with and without EIB, and in healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Three groups were studied: 10 patients with EIB, 10 asthmatic patients without EIB, and 4 normal control subjects.
    • Plasma catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline) were measured at rest, end of exercise, and 5 and 15 minutes post-exercise.

    • Patients with EIB exhibited significantly elevated plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline levels at the end of exercise, persisting into the recovery period.

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated plasma catecholamine levels during and after exercise are associated with exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in asthma.
    • The differential catecholamine response may help distinguish between asthmatic patients with and without EIB.
