    Area of Science:

    • Thoracic Surgery
    • Diagnostic Procedures
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Intrathoracic tumors require accurate diagnosis and staging.
    • Previous invasive procedures may fail to establish a diagnosis.
    • Thoracoscopy offers a minimally invasive approach.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and safety of thoracoscopy for intrathoracic tumors.
    • To assess the utility of thoracoscopy in patients with prior failed diagnostic attempts.

    Main Methods:

    • Thoracoscopy was performed on 45 patients (49 procedures).
    • Procedures targeted pleural disease, mediastinal masses, parenchymal lesions, and intrathoracic staging.
    • Stellate ganglion block and regional anesthesia were utilized.

    Main Results:

    • A correct diagnosis was achieved in 92% of cases (45/49 procedures).
    • Malignancy was diagnosed in 28 procedures, with unsuspected tumors found in 6 instances.
    • No clinically significant morbidity or procedure-related mortality was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Thoracoscopy is a highly accurate and safe diagnostic method for intrathoracic tumors.
    • The procedure demonstrates low morbidity and is effective even after previous failed diagnostic attempts.
    • Thoracoscopy is an attractive option for diagnosing intrathoracic neoplasia.
