    Area of Science:

    • Vascular Surgery
    • Infectious Disease

    Background:

    • Phlegmasia caerulea dolens is a severe form of deep vein thrombosis.
    • Thrombolytic therapy is a treatment option for severe venous thrombosis.

    Observation:

    • A patient with phlegmasia caerulea dolens received thrombolytic therapy.
    • The patient subsequently developed tetanus.

    Findings:

    • The development of tetanus following thrombolytic therapy for phlegmasia caerulea dolens is a rare but serious complication.
    • This suggests a potential link or increased susceptibility in this clinical scenario.

    Implications:

    • Clinicians should consider the risk of tetanus in patients with phlegmasia caerulea dolens undergoing thrombolytic therapy.
    • Ensuring adequate tetanus prophylaxis is crucial for preventing this complication.
