    Summary

    Staphylococcal aureus infections, without endocarditis, can cause acute glomerulonephritis. This suggests Staphylococcus aureus may be an unrecognized cause of primary glomerulonephritis.

    Background:

    • Staphylococcal infections are common but rarely linked to glomerulonephritis.
    • Glomerulonephritis is often associated with endocarditis or infected shunts.

    Observation:

    • Three patients with visceral Staphylococcus aureus infections developed acute glomerulonephritis.
    • No evidence of endocarditis was present in these patients.

    Findings:

    • Renal biopsies revealed mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis with IgA, IgG, and C3 deposits.
    • Autopsy confirmed acute diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis.

    Implications:

    • These cases differ from known Staphylococcal-associated glomerulonephritis syndromes.
    • Staphylococcus aureus may be an etiological factor in some primary or idiopathic glomerulonephritis cases.
