    Summary

    Pericardial effusion, fluid around the heart, occurred in half of symptomatic patients during a trichinosis outbreak. This finding suggests it may mimic congestive heart failure symptoms in trichinosis.

    Background:

    • Trichinosis is a parasitic infection that can cause a range of symptoms.
    • Cardiac complications of trichinosis are not well-characterized.
    • Pericardial effusion is a potential, though infrequently reported, cardiac manifestation.

    Observation:

    • During a trichinosis outbreak, four symptomatic patients were monitored.
    • Two of these four patients developed moderate to large pericardial effusions.
    • No ventricular dilatation or systolic dysfunction was observed in affected patients.

    Findings:

    • Pericardial effusion was observed in 50% of symptomatic trichinosis patients.
    • The effusions were hemodynamically significant without causing impaired cardiac function.
    • This suggests a higher prevalence of pericardial effusion in trichinosis than previously recognized.

    Implications:

    • Pericardial effusion may be a more common complication of trichinosis.
    • Cardiac symptoms in trichinosis patients may be attributed to pericardial effusion.
    • This finding necessitates considering pericardial effusion in the differential diagnosis of heart failure symptoms during trichinosis infections.
