    Summary

    Coffee does not significantly affect lower oesophageal sphincter pressure (LOSP). However, a meal significantly reduces LOSP, and coffee consumed after a meal may exacerbate this effect, potentially causing heartburn.

    Background:

    • Coffee consumption is common, and its effects on gastrointestinal function, particularly the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS), are of interest.
    • Heartburn is a common symptom, and its relationship with coffee and meal intake requires clarification.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of coffee on lower oesophageal sphincter pressure (LOSP) and intraoesophageal pH.
    • To determine if coffee directly affects LOSP or if symptoms are related to meal interactions.

    Main Methods:

    • 10 healthy volunteers participated.
    • Lower oesophageal sphincter pressure (LOSP) was measured using the rapid pull-through technique.
    • Measurements were taken in a fasting state and after a standard Lundh test meal, with and without coffee.

    Main Results:

    • Coffee, with or without milk, showed no significant effect on LOSP in the fasting state.
    • A Lundh meal alone caused a significant drop in LOSP (mean drop = 2.01 cm H2O).
    • Coffee consumed after the meal also resulted in a significant drop in LOSP (with milk: 1.80 cm H2O; without milk: 3.47 cm H2O).

    Conclusions:

    • Coffee itself does not appear to be the primary cause of heartburn by affecting the lower oesophageal sphincter.
    • Heartburn symptoms after coffee are more likely linked to the meal's effect on LOSP and subsequent acid reflux.
