    Summary

    Serum bile acid levels, including cholic acid (CCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CCDA), are elevated during acute hepatitis. However, these measurements offer no additional diagnostic information compared to standard liver tests.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate serum concentrations of cholic acid (CCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CCDA) in patients with acute hepatitis.
    • To compare the diagnostic utility of serum bile acid measurements with conventional liver function tests during acute hepatitis.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples were collected from 27 patients diagnosed with acute hepatitis.
    • Cholic acid (CCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CCDA) levels were quantified using radioimmunoassay.
    • Serum bile acid profiles were analyzed during the icteric phase and resolution of the disease.

    Conclusions:

    • Serum bile acid measurements, including CCA and CCDA, do not provide additional prognostic or diagnostic information beyond conventional liver tests in acute hepatitis.
    • The dynamic changes in CCA and CCDA during hepatitis resolution reflect altered bile acid metabolism.
    • Conventional liver tests remain sufficient for monitoring the course of acute hepatitis.
