Occupational trauma to the ulnar artery

H Gaylis

    Summary

Occupational hand trauma can cause ulnar artery thrombosis or aneurysm. Arteriography is crucial for diagnosing these vascular injuries, even without obvious external signs, to prevent complications.

    Area of Science:

    • Vascular Surgery
    • Occupational Medicine
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Occupational hand trauma frequently leads to ulnar artery thrombosis or aneurysm.
    • Diagnosis of these vascular lesions is often challenging.

    Observation:

    • A series of 14 patients with ulnar artery lesions following hand trauma was studied.
    • Lesions were diagnosed using arteriography.

    Findings:

    • Absence of external vascular signs does not rule out ulnar artery injury after trauma.
    • Arteriography is essential for identifying both thrombosis and aneurysm.

    Implications:

    • Early diagnosis via arteriography can prevent complications like ulnar nerve compression or digital embolism.
    • This highlights the importance of considering vascular injury in hand trauma patients presenting with ulnar-sided pain.
