    Summary

Intercellular slitlike spaces in melanocytic nevi may be artifacts. These spaces form due to changes in the dermal tissue

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatopathology
    • Connective Tissue Biology

    Background:

    • Intradermal melanocytic nevi exhibit variable microscopic features.
    • The presence and significance of intercellular spaces within nevi are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the ultrastructural characteristics of intradermal melanocytic nevi.
    • To determine the nature of intercellular slitlike spaces and associated dermal changes.

    Main Methods:

    • Light microscopy and electron microscopy were performed on deparaffinized tissue from six intradermal melanocytic nevi.
    • Histologic and ultrastructural features, including elastic tissue and collagen, were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Intercellular spaces, when present, were lined by nevus cells and contained collagen fibrils.
    • Both nevi with and without spaces showed immature elastic tissue and finer collagen fibrils compared to normal dermis.
    • These altered dermal components may reduce tissue resistance to mechanical stress.

    Conclusions:

    • The observed changes in elastic and collagen fibers suggest a predisposition to artifact formation.
    • Intercellular slitlike spaces in melanocytic nevi are likely artifactual clefts resulting from processing.
    • Understanding these artifacts is crucial for accurate histopathologic interpretation of melanocytic lesions.
