    Hypothermia patients frequently have serious infections that are hard to detect. Prompt antibiotic treatment is recommended, as delayed therapy can be fatal.

    Background:

    • Hypothermia due to exposure is a serious medical condition.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of serious infections in adults admitted with hypothermia.
    • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and timeliness of antibiotic administration for these infections.
    • To determine the impact of infection and delayed treatment on patient outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective chart review of 59 adult patients admitted with hypothermia between 1968 and 1979.
    • Analysis of infection rates, types of infections, diagnostic delays, and treatment patterns.
    • Correlation of clinical findings (coma, lymphocyte count) and outcomes with the presence of infection.

    • 24 out of 59 (41%) hypothermia patients had 32 serious infections.

    • Serious infections are common in hypothermia patients and are often masked.
    • Physicians frequently failed to identify and promptly treat infections in this cohort.
    • Repeated evaluations are crucial for early infection detection, and prompt empiric antibiotic therapy is advised.
