    Background:

    • Conventional portable chest radiographs have limitations in visualizing chest abnormalities in intensive care unit (ICU) patients.
    • Accurate diagnosis of intrathoracic conditions is crucial for effective management of critically ill patients.

    Observation:

    • Thoracic computed tomography (CT) was utilized in 19 ICU patients.
    • The study aimed to delineate chest abnormalities not clearly visualized on standard radiography.

    Findings:

    • CT scans revealed new, significant findings in 5 out of 19 patients (26%).
    • These findings included malpositioned thoracostomy tubes, loculated pleural fluid, unsuspected pneumothorax, and pericardial effusion.
    • The identified abnormalities substantially altered patient management and clinical course.
