    Area of Science:

    • Gerontology
    • Sleep Medicine
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Sleep disturbances are common complaints among elderly individuals.
    • Previous research has not fully elucidated the specific sleep disorders prevalent in older populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the prevalence of sleep disorders in elderly patients (≥60 years) versus younger patients.
    • To identify the most common sleep disorders affecting the elderly population.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 83 elderly patients and 423 younger patients from a sleep clinic.
    • Comprehensive evaluations including medical, psychological, and polysomnographic assessments.
    • Diagnosis based on the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers' classification system.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Sleep apnea syndrome (39%) and periodic movements-restless legs syndrome (18%) were most common in the elderly.
    • These syndromes were significantly more prevalent in older patients (p < .001), affecting 68% of the elderly group.
    • Elderly patients exhibited more objective sleep disturbances, including increased wake time, frequent/longer awakenings, and reduced stage-4 sleep.

    Conclusions:

    • Complaints of sleep-wake dysfunction in the elderly are often associated with specific pathological sleep disturbances.
    • Sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome are highly prevalent and significant contributors to sleep problems in older adults.
    • Targeted diagnosis and treatment of these sleep disorders are crucial for improving sleep quality in the elderly.
