    Summary

    Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) therapy significantly improved symptoms in patients with mammary dysplasia. It also corrected abnormal serum cholesterol levels, suggesting its effectiveness for benign breast disease.

    Background:

    • Mammary dysplasia is a common benign breast condition.
    • Patients with mammary dysplasia often exhibit abnormal serum cholesterol profiles.
    • Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) is an antioxidant with potential therapeutic benefits.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the therapeutic effect of alpha-tocopherol on mammary dysplasia.
    • To analyze the impact of alpha-tocopherol on serum cholesterol levels in patients with mammary dysplasia.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty-six patients with mammary dysplasia and five controls received alpha-tocopherol (600 mg/day).
    • Serum samples were analyzed for cholesterol in lipoprotein fractions using precipitation and ultracentrifugation.
    • Clinical assessments evaluated objective and subjective disease remission.

    Main Results:

    • Eighty-five percent of patients experienced remission from mammary dysplasia.
    • The elevated serum cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio in patients was normalized by therapy.
    • Alpha-tocopherol increased high-density lipoproteins and decreased low-density lipoprotein ester cholesterol.

    Conclusions:

    • Alpha-tocopherol is an effective treatment for mammary dysplasia.
    • Alpha-tocopherol therapy corrects abnormal serum cholesterol distribution in mammary dysplasia.
    • Vitamin E shows promise for managing benign breast conditions and associated metabolic abnormalities.
